Since “Cascade” will appear in the exhibition, I thought it would be fun to use one of the other poses from the session for the donated piece. There are size constraints on the auction pieces, so this is smaller than I usually work on Colourfix:

My comments: Kiersten and I thought it would be fun to have a colored pencil cameo of the two of us for our wedding reception. This piece is the companion to my self portrait – she’s sitting in front of the same window. We’re planning on displaying the two of them together.

My comments: Ardent is the sister picture to Lambent, part of a series of candlelit pictures. Lambent relied on some of the neon colors, such as Neon Orange and Neon Red, to get its saturation. I toned down the neons in Ardent, and instead used colors like Salmon Pink and Madder Lake. The original reference was very yellow, and I found myself always adding yellows to this picture to be more true to the reference. In hindsight, I would have liked the skin tones having more of a peach hue. The final color harmony was a bit off because of this. Also, I had trouble getting some of the darks dark enough on the brown Colourfix paper; in some ways I liked the red paper of Lambent better, because it warmed the picture more where it showed through. Both Ardent and Lambent are about serenity. They make me think of the quiet rooms of a spa, with candlelight, soft music, and relaxation.

My comments: When I asked my brother if there was anything in particular he’d like for Christmas, he surprised me by asking for a colored pencil portrait of him. I chose Pastelbord for this because my self portrait was done on it, and I liked the idea that the two pictures would share a similar visual style.

My comments: This was part of a DC115 members’ project for the hospitality suite display at the 2007 CPSA show. The overhead lighting used in the piece gave me the idea to draw Cascade – although I switched to brown Colorfix paper for that piece.
