Prismacolor colored pencils on Stonehenge paper, 18″ H x 13.5 ” W. Completed 2004.

My comments: This piece had a full underpainting done in blue. Despite the vibrant oranges, there is very little orange in the picture. Most of the orange shadows are red and purple, with only the highlights containing Pale Vermillion. The purples juxtoposed with the orange highlights is one of the things that make the colors so intense. The white sheets have a fun mix of warms and cools. There was a small catastrophe at the end of this picture when I went to wipe off the wax bloom with a slightly damp tissue – the loose red pigment streaked into the white sheets, permanently staining them pink. I was able to clean them up somewhat, but the cast remains. Lesson learned.

  • This is really beautiful. Excellent work. I only wish the image size was bigger.

  • Thanks Paul! With a little tinkering, I’ve just updated the site to display larger pictures when you click on them.
